UMPIRE DECISION REVIEW

 UPSC GS MAINS IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

What do you understand by Umpire Decision Review System in Cricket? Discuss its various components. Explain how silicone tape on the edge of the bat may fool the system.

The Umpire Decision review System(UDRS) is a technology based system used in wicket to assist match officials with their decision - making on fields umpire may choose to consult the third umpire(known as umpire review) and player may also request for third umpire decision to reconsider on field umpire decision (known as players review) .

The components of UDRs are:
1. Television replays , including slow motion.
2.Hawkeye or virtual eyes to track the path of the ball.
3.Snickometer: microphone to detect small sounds made as the ball hits pad or bat.
4.Hotspot: IR imagining system that shows where the ball has been in contact with the ball or the pad.

This system was a gossip issue after Ashes 2013 in England, as the use of silicon tape on bat was questioned.

The hotspot used in the UDRS provides the evidence to whether the ball has hit the bat or not. It uses thermal imaging (IR) technology to look for the heat left behind when the ball makes contact with the surface. When the ball just touches the edge of the bat, friction between them generates heat and which is detected. The silicon tape reduces frictional forces between the bat and the ball and therefore reduces the heat generated during collision between the two hence, if the bat is covered with silicon tape, it is difficult to get corrected decision from the third umpire, since due to low friction, low level of heat generated is not able to be detected by IR imaging technology.
