THE VEDIC LITERATURE:




The word veda is derived from the Sanskrit root Vid('to know') and the Vedas are said to have divine revelation. 

The Veda:
There are four Vedas- Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yujur Veda, Atharvana Veda.

Rig Veda: 
It is the oldest among all vedas(1500-900 BC). It is a collection of hymns for use at sacrifices. It consists of 1017 hymns and divided into 10 mandalas.

Sama Veda:  
It is a collection of verses from rig veda with exception of 75 hymns. It is also known as Book of Chants derived from root saman .i.e 'melody'. It is sung at at the time of Soma Sacrifices.

Yajur Veda: 
It is a book of sacrificial prayers. It is divided into Black Yajur veda (prose) and white yajur veda(hymns). 

Atharvana Veda:

It is entirely different from the other three vedas and the latest of the four. It deals with magical formula and witchcraft.It contains non Aryan elements.
