VEERAMAMUNIVAR - A Missionary in South India

Veeramamunivar (November 8, 1680 – February 4, 1747) was born in Casthigilion , Italy . 

His real name – kanctantain cocappu pecki ( Constantine Joseph Beschi ). He is the pastor of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . 

He has done excellent work for the development and progress of the Tamil language. He is credited with writing 23 books in Tamil and composing events related to the life of Jesus Christ and the history of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, as an epic in Tamil culture called ” Thembavani ” as a testament to his Tamil scholarship. He received his scholarship in Tamil through Subradeepak Kavirayar .


In TamilNadu



He stayed in Goa for a few days, planned to go to Tamil Nadu, came to Kochi and from there came to Ambalakkad as a herdsman; Kamanayakkanpatti came and joined in Madurai .

He has built Christian churches in many districts of Tamil Nadu. In particular, St. Periyanayaki has made her mother famous and famous all over the world by making wooden statues of her mother dressed in a sari for her mother-in-law according to Tamil culture. He has built St. Periyanayaki Mother Temple at Thavalappallam village in Alangudi circle in Pudukkottai district, St. Periyanayaki Mother temple at Aur village, St. Periyanayaki Mother temple at Konankuppam village in Cuddalore district and St. Asylum Mother temple at Elakurichi village.

All the temples he built are of the same shape. The temple he built could seat only fifty people.


His Tamil way of life


In 1822 , Vithuvan Muthusamy Pillai , who first wrote and published his history in Tamil, wrote his style and imitation in the book as follows.

From the day he came to this country, he used to feed the animal meats and feed the two Tamil ascetic children only once a day. 1.After coming to Tamil Nadu, he learned Tamil grammar and literature from Subradeepak Kavirayar and became proficient in conducting literary lectures.

2.He is also known as the “preacher looking for clues”. Many of these rare treasures are said to have been destroyed.

3.He published books such as Thirukkural, Thevaram , Tirupugal  , Nannul , Attisudi   other European languages ​​to make the Tamil people feel better .

4.Created a Tamil-Latin dictionary to learn Tamil. In it, Latin explanations were given for 1000 Tamil words. This is the first Tamil dictionary . He then created a Tamil-Pothukkiya dictionary of 4400 words.

5.Tamil literary grammars came from the poetic form. He realized that people could not read them easily and turned them into prose .
